Visceral fat is found in the abdominal cavity and it surrounds several vital organs, including the liver, stomach and intestines. Some visceral fat is necessary as it protects our organs however if you have too much it can cause significant health issues.
Visceral fat can increase insulin resistance, raise blood pressure, heart attacks and heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, breast cancer, colorectal cancer and Alzheimers to name but a few.
Visceral fat cannot been seen so don't confuse this with subcutaneous fat which is the fat you can grab and is found all over the body.
Measuring your visceral fat isn't easy and normally to get a really accurate measure you would need an MRI or CT scan, however there are a few brands of scales that do measure visceral fat, I use them myself with my clients, but this type of scale would only give an approximate reading but still a good guide to measure and get some idea of your levels.
Visceral fat is measured on a scale of 1 to 59, Healthy levels of visceral fat should stay under 12. If your rating is between 13-59 you really need to consider some lifestyle changes.
Regular exercise, healthy eating, eliminating processed high sugar and all bad fats found in food is the perfect place to start.
Cortisol the stress hormone also plays a part in increasing how much visceral fat your body stores so looking at your stress levels and practicing meditation is also recommended.
